In Swaziland, you can always expect to have an adventure! Yesterday, I went with Esther to visit her mother and some of her family. They live on a mountain and the area is called Bulunga. We hitched a ride up the mountain with a group of men doing electric work. After the 30 minute ride and 30 minute walk, we finally arrived at her mother's home. Her mother, Gogo Sophie is 92 and lives by herself in a small mud hut looking out over the mountains. She is so beautiful with her dark skin and many wrinkles but the most stunning thing is her bright blue eyes. Esther's son and his family live across the road from Gogo Sophie so we visited with both of the families. The family has 4 children, one of which is only 2 months old. There I was holding a 2 month old while sitting with her 92 year old great-grandmother. It was just a wonderfu
l picture of life in its many stages.
Gogo Sophie gave us each our own chicken- luckily it was promptly killed and de-feathered and I didn't have anything to do with it. We ate boiled ground nuts which are one of my favorite Swazi snacks and started the journey home. We started walking home, wondering how we were going to get off the mountain when the family ran up with pounds of ground nuts, each of our chickens, and about 25 avocados. If we were ever thinking of walking the 3 hours down the mountain, we definitely couldn't after receiving all of our heavy gifts. There were no cars in sight, the bus wasn't running, and the kombi had already left for town. So there we were stuck on the top of this mountain for 4 hours! It was a fun adventure and we both made it home safely with a good story to tell :)
